Director, Ruel W. Tyson Distinguished Professor of Humanities

Patricia Parker is the Ruel W. Tyson Distinguished Professor of Humanities and has been a member of the Carolina faculty since 1998.

Tommie Watson

Executive Director

Tommie Watson is the Executive Director for the Institute for the Arts and Humanities. He provides leadership and strategy for the Institute while managing the day-to-day operations.

Angela O’Neill

Director of Development

Angela leads the IAH’s efforts to secure external funding from individual donors and foundations for its programs in support of faculty.

Philip Hollingsworth

Philip Hollingsworth

Program Administrator

Philip serves as the Program Administrator for the Institute’s faculty programs, where he coordinates and supports all faculty programs offered through the Institute.

Rebecca Williams

Rebecca Williams

Business Manager

Rebecca Williams manages the administration and finances of the Institute’s programs and initiatives, including events and grants support.

Ebony R. Johnson serves as the Institute’s Event Planner. She believes that “vision matters” and dedicates her time to making creative visions a reality at the Institute.

Administrative Assistant

Ava serves as the Institute’s Administrative Assistant and as Executive Assistant to the IAH Director.

Kristen Chavez

Kristen Chavez

Communications Specialist

Kristen manages the internal and external communications for the Institute. Her duties include overseeing the website, monthly newsletter and promoting public events.

Director Emeritus (2019-2020)

Andrew Perrin is a professor of sociology and director emeritus of the Institute for the Arts and Humanities.

Mark Katz

Director Emeritus (Director 2014-2019), Distinguished Professor of Music

Mark Katz is the Ruel W. Tyson, Jr. Distinguished Professor of Humanities and former Director of the Institute for the Arts and Humanities.

James Moeser

James Moeser

Chancellor Emeritus (2000-2008), Director Emeritus (Interim Director 2016-2017)

James Moeser is Chancellor Emeritus and served as interim director for the Institute for the Arts in Humanities from 2016-2017, and has an office located in Hyde Hall.

Director Emeritus (Director 2006-2014), Professor Emeritus of English and Comparative Literature

John McGowan served for eight years as the Director of UNC’s Institute for the Arts and Humanities.

Ruel Tyson

IAH Founder and Director Emeritus (Director 1987-2006)

Ruel Tyson founded the Institute for the Arts and Humanities and guided its development as director for 20 years. He remained dedicated to scholarship and service until his passing in 2019.
