FreeHayti Heritage Center/Pauli Murray Center Whistle Stop Tour: Pauli’s Durham: History of Racial Segregation in the West End
Hosted by the New Faculty Program
NFP participants and the Carolina community are invited to a tour with Whistle Stop Tours and the Pauli Murray Center for History and Social Justice to illuminate the life of unsung shero Pauli Murray – Pauli’s multi-racial ancestry, family’s legacy as educators and entrepreneurs, and commitment to human and civil rights activism. Witness the Fitzgerald Family’s determination for emancipation as remembered through the memories and writing of the Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray. Together, we will unpack personal memories and embody collective responsibility with one another. Move through your curiosities, and create with us! Stops include the Fitzgerald Home, Pauli Murray Mural, African-American Cemetery, and more! Listen to the stories of a Colored Civil War soldier, Grandma Cornelia, and many others.
The walk begins and ends at the Pauli Murray House 906 Carroll St. Durham and ends at The Fitzgerald Family Cemetery at Kent and Morehead Streets.
Following the walking tour, everyone is warmly invited to some socializing at Hayti Collective Kitchen & Cocktails (908-101 Fayetteville St., Durham, NC 27701).
