The Process Series at UNC continues its 2013-2014 season with a new work-in-progress by performance and installation artist Roxana Pérez-Méndez. Pérez-Méndez will present a traveling multimedia experience titled En Mi Espejo, Veo Tu Cara (In My Mirror, I See Your Face) on October 25 and 26, beginning outside the Morehead Planetarium on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus.
En Mi Espejo, Veo Tu Cara combines firsthand narrative and holographic video to create a guided tour of colonialism in the Americas through the eyes of a single Puerto Rican woman. Beginning the journey from 17th century Spain outside the Morehead Planetarium, and continuing through several stages to a final denouement at Swain Hall, the audience will walk from site to site and gain first-hand perspective on the experience of immigration and the lasting effects of a colonial empire through immersive performance.
Roxana Pérez-Méndez is a video performance and installation artist currently on faculty in UNC’s Department of Art. Her work reflects the arbitrary nature of contemporary identity through the lens of her own experience as a Puerto Rican woman. Pérez-Méndez is based in Philadelphia and has exhibited and performed widely, including but not limited to the Times Museum (Guangzhou, China), the North Carolina Museum of Art (Raleigh), the Morris Gallery at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (Philadelphia), the Elizabeth Foundation of the Arts (New York), the Arlington Arts Center (Arlington), and the Fleisher-Ollman Gallery (Philadelphia).
Now in its sixth season, the Process Series has announced a new partnership with the Institute for the Arts and Humanities (IAH) and is supported in part by the College of Arts and Sciences, the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs and the departments of communication studies, art, music, English and comparative literature, dramatic art, and African, African American and Diaspora Studies.

Dedicated to the development of new and significant works in the performing arts, The Process Series (Joseph Megel, founding artistic director) features professionally mounted, developmental presentations of new works in progress. The mission of the Series is to illuminate the ways in which artistic ideas take form, to examine the creative process, to offer audiences the opportunity to follow artists and performers as they explore and discover and by so doing to enrich the development process for artists with the ultimate goal of better art and a closer relationship between artists and audiences.
