Chapman Family Faculty Fellowships

Chapman Family Faculty Fellowships provide semester-long, on-campus fellowships for faculty who have distinguished teaching records at UNC and regularly teach undergraduate students.

The Chapman Fellowship provides funding to Fellows’ departments to cover their semester leaves. In addition, the Chapman Fellowship provides a meal during the weekly seminar in which the group of eight to 12 Fellows to exchange ideas with colleagues from other disciplines.

Chapman Fellows also receive a $5,000 stipend to support their teaching, research and service activities.

Fellowship projects include performances and exhibitions in the fine arts, reading programs that revitalize a field of teaching, outreach and internships or fieldwork related to the applicant’s teaching or research.

Eligibility

Faculty members from any unit of the university may apply for a Chapman Fellowship if they regularly teach undergraduate students, have taught at UNC for at least three full years and have established distinguished teaching records.

Faculty members of all ranks are encouraged to apply. The Institute seeks a blend of ranks and disciplines for each class of Fellows.

Application Process

The application process begins in the fall of each year. Deadlines for applications are announced at that time. Applicants may apply for either fall or spring semester of the following academic year.

The application includes:

  • Chapman Fellowship application form
  • Current CV
  • Statement of teaching philosophy
  • Proposal describing how the fellowship term will be spent
  • Set of student evaluations
  • Syllabi for three courses taught in the past three years
  • Names of referees who can speak to the applicant's performance as a teacher at UNC-Chapel Hill

Fellows are selected by the Chapman Selection Committee, comprising Fellows who serve on the IAH's Faculty Advisory Board. Applicants may be asked to meet with members of the committee to discuss the proposal and the courses taught. Committee members also may ask to visit an applicant's class.

Applications for fellowships in the 2010-2011 academic year are due to Martha Marks in Hyde Hall Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at noon.
