Chapman Family Teaching Award

The Chapman Teaching Awards were created in 1993 during the Bicentennial Campaign through a generous gift by Max Carrol Chapman, Jr. '66 on behalf of the Chapman family. The awards were established to honor distinguished teaching of undergraduate students. The award conveys a semester's leave as a Fellow at the Institute for the Arts and Humanities and a stipend of $10,000.

The Chapman Family Teaching Award, formerly known as the Chapman Family Faculty Fellowship, honors a distinguished record of teaching undergraduates at UNC over an extended period of time.

Chapman Fellows join the Faculty Fellows seminar at the IAH for one semester to pursue a study project with no teaching responsibilities for that term.

The award is administered by the Provost's Office. Information on the award is available at the Chapman Family Teaching Award page.

Eligibility

Visit the Chapman Family Teaching Award page on the Provost's website for the full list of criteria. Any teacher of undergraduate students who is a full-time faculty member (tenured or tenure-track) is eligible. Nominees must have taught at UNC-Chapel Hill for at least five years.

Note: Because the Chapman Family Teaching Award includes a semester's leave at the IAH, Chapman recipients may not hold IAH Fellowships in the same year that they are Chapman Award winners.

Application Process

The application process is now administered by the Provost's Office as part of the annual University Teaching Awards process. The annual deadline for the following academic year is October 1.

For questions about the award, please contact John McGowan (962-6831) or Bryan Koen (843-5464).
