McGowan to moderate national panel on collaborative working groups

Chapel HIl, N.C. -- Institute for the Arts and Humanities (IAH) Director John McGowan, will moderate a workshop for national humanities center leaders in March on the topic of colaborative work in humanities centers and institutes.

The workshop, "Collaborative Work in the Humanities," will be a key activity of the 2008 Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes, to be held March 14-15 at The Center for the Humanities at Washington University in St. Louis.

The annual meeting, titled "The Humanities in an Age of Science," will focus on the role of the humanities in today's universities, what changes may be in order to meet the needs of universities and the public today, and what part collaboration can play in that process.

Promoting collaborative work by faculty from diverse disciplines is an IAH priority and a key component of its  unique model for faculty development. The panel will consider possible uses of digital media to facilitate scholarly and artistic collaboration.

Joining McGowan, The Ruel W. Tyson Jr. Distinguished Professor of Humanities, for the discussion will be Anthony J. Cascardi, director of the Townsend Center for the Humanities at the University of California, Berkeley; Ann Gaylin, program officer for the American Council of Learned Societies; David Theo Goldberg, director of the University of California Humanities Research Institute; and Julie Thompson-Klein, professor of Humanities in the Interdisciplinary Studies Program at Wayne State University.
