Fellows recognized for teaching excellence

Chapel Hill, N.C. — Six Faculty Fellows of the Institute for the Arts and Humanities were among those who today received distinguished teaching awards, the highest campuswide recognition for teaching excellence. The awardees were honored during the halftime of the Carolina vs. N.C. State men's basketball game.

The fellows honored were:

  • Stephen Birdsall, professor of geography and former dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, (Chapman Fellow, Fall 2003) was named as this year's UNC-Chapel Hill nominee for the UNC Board of Governors' Award for Excellence in Teaching.
  • Pamela Cooper, associate professor of English, (Cotton Fellow, Fall 1997) was named a University Professor of Distinguished Teaching.
  • Marianne Gingher, associate professor of English, (Chapman Fellow, Fall 2000) won a James M. Johnston Teaching Excellence Award.
  • Lawrence Grossberg, Distinguished Professor of Communication Studies, (Faculty Fellow, Fall 1996) won a Distinguished Teaching Award for Post-Baccalaureate Teaching and Mentoring.
  • Timothy McMillan, adjunct assistant professor of African and Afro-American studies, (Hamilton Fellow, Spring 2006), won a Tanner Faculty Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching.
  • Linda Wagner-Martin, Distinguished Professor of English, (Arts and Sciences Fellow, Spring 1992) won the William C. Friday/Class of 1986 Award for Excellence in Teaching.
