The CHAT Festival Schedule

The IAH and our partners in the CHAT festival are hard at work scheduling great performances, exhibitions, workshops, keynotes and panels. We will update the schedule as we confirm participants. In the meantime, here is an overview of the overall festival structure:

Tuesday, February 16

The festival will kick off with an opening ceremony in Memorial Hall followed by a keynote lecture on technology, collaboration and entrepreneurship. (Our keynote speaker is confirmed: We'll distribute a press release soon to announce the lecture.)

That evening, at an electro-acoustic concert, headliners Stephen Anderson and Thomas Otten will debut new works. This Festival on the Hill event will take place in Memorial Hall at 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday, February 17

Throughout the day, participants will have an opportunity to engage with faculty project exhibitions. Faculty will be on hand at scheduled times to show and discuss their work with participants.

Morning events will include check-in and the grand festival opening/welcome at Memorial Hall (9:00 to 9:30 a.m.). We will offer two hour-long K-12 teaching clinics. During the first hour, most festival participants will have an opportunity to interact with students and faculty showing their projects. In the second hour, festival participants will have the opportunity to attend one of two "soundbytes," our "byte" sized panels of two discussants who will talk for 30 minutes and answer audience questions for the remainder of the hour.

Over the lunch hour, festival participants can grab bagged lunches and tour the faculty exhibitions or take part in a lunchtime seminar with electro-acoustic composers.

In the afternoon, our keynote panel will address artistic mashup/remix in Memorial Hall.

Participants may choose from a variety of evening events, which will include performances and some dinner events.

Thursday, February 18

While the topics and exhibitions will vary, Thursday's schedule will follow the much of the same structure as the day before. The K-12 teacher clinic, soundbyte and lunchtime seminar topics will vary.

This afternoon, the keynote speaker will address technology in education from an anthropological point of view. (Expect an announcement of this keynote speaker, who is also confirmed, in the coming weeks.) Following the lecture, the keynote speaker will moderate a panel on this topic.

In the evening, we will offer several performances, including a Festival on the Hill DJ/Veejay Dance Party featuring national and local performers.

Friday, February 19

The last full day of the festival follows the same pattern, again with new topics for our participants to explore and engage with. Our keynote panel will address the topic of artistic expression through technology, particularly through game engines.

During the afternoon, Festival on the Hill will also provide a robust schedule of events with paper presentations, panel discussion and performances on the topic of The Art and Culture of the DJ.

This evening, participants can take part in the a premiere performance composed by Raúl Yañez and performed by DJ Radar and the Charanga Carolina, UNC's Latin music ensemble. This event will officially close out Festival on the Hill.

Friday evening also marks the first evening of the Carolina Performing Arts' spectacular show STREB:Brave, performed by Streb Dance Company  in conjunction composer David Van Teighem and the MIT Media Lab.

Saturday, February 20

While we do not have any scheduled daytime events, participants will have an opportunity to attend an encore performance of STREB:Brave through Carolina Performing Arts.
