The IAH Model

Our model for faculty professional development helps create a strong interdisciplinary and collaborative intellectual community at Carolina.

A key component is the weekly or monthly "conversation" held among fellows from diverse disciplines. These conversations allow faculty to share their ideas and gain new perspectives from colleagues across campus to inform their teaching, research and service. Many fellows continue meeting regularly with their new cross-campus colleagues after the fellowship semester ends to continue benefiting from that rich exchange.

Conversation forms the core of all IAH programs, fueling intellectual exchange and creating broad networks that support Carolina's faculty.

"The Conversation"

"All morning as we talk inside the room around the table... stitching and unstitching in the telling and the hearing, the taking issue with, concord and discord, every one of us around the table..."

From "The Conversation," written by Alan Shapiro, W.R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor of English, UNC-Chapel Hill, for Hyde Hall dedication, Oct. 12, 2002
